2018 Summer Internship – for students nominated by Collaborating Institutions
As part of the STEM BUILD at UMBC Initiative, UMBC will host a six-week summer program for select students with an interest in pursuing a four-year degree in a STEM discipline. This applied learning experience introduces and inspires students to consider possible careers in biomedical and behavioral research and also supports success in STEM. Participants are to be nominated for this summer internship opportunity by the designated representative of one of the initiative’s six collaborating institutions – Anne Arundel Community College (AACC), Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Howard Community College (HCC), Montgomery College (MC), Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), and Gallaudet University.
Internship Basics:
- Six-week summer internship will be held June 11 to July 20, 2018, weekdays only;
- Projects will be themed in the biomedical and behavioral sciences
- Research readiness preparation includes: safety, ethics, math/reading, personal, and career/advising skills training;
- Students receive $10.00 per hour, 40 hours per week, and a UMBC Parking hanger. (Note: Per NIH rules, campus housing or food cannot be provided as part of this internship.)
- Research experience will be gained through team research projects addressing real questions under the mentorship of faculty and industry researchers; and
- Students will present the results of their work at the 4th Annual Research Symposium for the BUILD a Bridge to STEM Summer Internship Program at UMBC on the morning of July 19, 2018.
Participating community college students who complete this internship may be invited to apply to the BUILD Training Program (BTP) after they earn their Associate’s Degrees and are ready to transfer to a four-year university.
Per NIH requirements, All BUILD a Bridge to STEM Summer Interns must be: “be U.S. citizens or non-citizen nationals or permanent residents and must be enrolled full time at the applicant institution or Pipeline Partner or Graduate/Medical Partner institutions (if applicable). A non-citizen national is a person who, although not a citizen of the United States, owes permanent allegiance to the U.S. This is generally a person born in a land that is not a state, but that is under U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration, e.g., American Samoa. An individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence must possess a currently valid Permanent Resident Card (USCIS Form I-551) or other legal verification of such status prior to receiving financial benefit from or employment on the grant.”
The application process of the BUILD a Bridge to STEM Summer Research Internship will be guided by the fact that the participants are hired for the six-week internships as Contingent I staff (General Assistants) at UMBC. Therefore, the students selected by their home institutions for this opportunity are required to complete the application for nonexempt positions at UMBC and submit resumes.
Completed application packages will be submitted by the designated official from one of the six collaborating institutions with a cover letter to Kathy Lee Sutphin, Executive Director, STEM BUILD at UMBC.
